Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth is pleased to announce that Karen DeGrand has been named Managing Partner of the firm. She succeeds Mark Burden, who held the role since 2017, and joins the firm’s 3-partner Management Committee with Stetson Atwood and Michael Borree.
“For nearly 25 years, Donohue Brown has maintained a reputation as a premier Chicago defense firm, delivering favorable verdicts and appellate rulings on behalf of our clients,” Ms. DeGrand says. “I look forward to building on the firm’s foundation of exceeding clients’ expectations and working with the next generation of talented DBMS attorneys.”
Ms. DeGrand leads the firm’s appellate practice. She has extensive experience representing clients before the appellate and supreme courts of Illinois and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, she advises clients and trial counsel regarding preservation of issues for appeal and handles post-trial proceedings in circuit and district courts. Ms. DeGrand maintains an active trial-level practice defending attorneys and physicians in a wide range of professional liability matters, as well as representing defendants in product liability and employment actions and litigating business and insurance coverage disputes.
A member of Donohue Brown’s original team of attorneys when the group opened the doors of the firm in 1995, Ms. DeGrand earned her undergraduate degree, with highest university honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law.
