Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth, LLC is pleased to announce that Scott Howie has joined the firm as a partner. Mr. Howie concentrates his practice on appeals. In hundreds of civil appeals over more than 25 years, he has authored more than five hundred appellate briefs and delivered well over a hundred oral arguments, including several in the Illinois Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has also put this experience to work at trial, where he has provided advice and recommendations in preserving issues for appeal. Adding to the firm’s existing appellate practice, Mr. Howie’s experience will provide additional support to trial counsel throughout the life of a litigated matter in discovery, trial, and at all levels of appeal.

DBMS partner Karen Kies DeGrand, leader of the firm’s appellate practice, is delighted to welcome Mr. Howie to DBMS. Having had the pleasure of working with Mr. Howie in a number of post-trial and appellate matters, Ms. DeGrand knows from first-hand experience that Mr. Howie is a great appellate lawyer. “Scott’s work as an appellate advocate is of the highest quality,” she said. “So is his legal analysis, his skill with the pen and his oral advocacy.”
