Biography

Monica L. Smit graduated magna cum laude from UIC John Marshall Law School in 2021. Ms. Smit served as the Editor-In-Chief of the UIC John Marshall Law Review for 2020-2021. She actively participated in the Moot Court Honors Program where she served as an Associate Justice on the Moot Court Honors Board as well as participated in the Stetson National Pretrial Competition and the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competitions. Ms. Smit was awarded second best brief and second best oralist in the 2020 Regional ABA Appellate Advocacy Moot Court Competition. She earned Top Grade Awards in Constitutional Law I, Constitutional Law II, Constitutional Theory, and Criminal Procedure.

During law school, Ms. Smit served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Mary Kay Rochford, Illinois Appellate Court First District, and as a judicial extern to the Honorable Celia G. Gamrath, Circuit Court of Cook County Chancery Division. She additionally worked at a prominent First Amendment law firm in Texas and served as an intern for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

Ms. Smit graduated cum laude from Liberty University in 2018 with undergraduate degrees in Politics and Policy and Western Legal Traditions.
